Rare Specimens burst onto the national scene with an incendiary performance at Rhythm & Alps in 2023, where they were simultaneously hailed as both the best act at the festival and “The Travelling Wilburys of Disco.”
The quartet includes Dan Rainey, Nick Munday, Matt McPhee and Pete Green, all core members of label and party collective Tempo Schmempo, and firm fixtures in New Zealand’s festival, club and private party scene.
United by their love of disco, Italo, acid house, Detroit techno and UK club culture, the group combines road-tested experience with finely tuned taste acquired through decades of crate-digging and DJing across the globe. With releases on labels such as Paper Recordings and Late Night Tales, they also possess a production pedigree that cannot be ignored.
Known for their extended sets and infectious live performances, Rare Specimens have honed their charismatic four-deck style into a seamless stylistic melting pot, always delivered with tasteful authority and unmatched energy.
